Q & A with Slater Doggett

Slater Doggett

Slater Doggett

Slater Doggett is not only a Canadian ice hockey player, he is also a very fine fellow for taking the time to respond to some questions from someone he doesn’t know on the other side of the world. Thanks Slater!

1) Is there a story (that you’ve been told) about where your name comes from?
So my grandmother on my dad’s side, her maiden name is Slater –  so I guess my parents liked that name.  A pretty weird coincidence is that my grandma with the last name Slater passed away with cancer on my first birthday.
2) What does your name mean to you? Do YOU think you have a great name?
To me the name is like anybody else’s name. For the most part my friends don’t call me Slater but for me it’s an up and down thing because I always feel like I have a weird name and  that some people might judge me – but for the most part it’s no different than having any other name.  It’s kind of annoying when people ask me if Slater is my real name, but most people end up saying they really like it and I can’t complain about that.
3) Is it good or bad – or perhaps a bit of both – to have a distinctive name?
I’d say it can be a bit of both because a lot of people say it’s a cool name and that they wished they had a unique name like me.  Also sometimes I think to myself that these people saying that wish they had a unique name until they actually had one, sometimes I wish I just had a normal name but having something that helps you stand out is an advantage in my eyes.
4) Do you care what others think of your name? What reactions from others have you encountered over the years?
Sometimes I get a little self-conscious of my name and what people will think of it, for example a couple of weeks ago a girl in my gym class asked what my name was and when she heard Slater, she looked shocked and asked the typical question,”is that your real name?” In the end people usually tell me they like it, but I do care what others think.
5) Do you have a favourite name you’ve come across over the years?
Off the top of my head I’m drawing a blank of some interesting names, but I have a little brother who also plays hockey he’s 12 years old and his name is Holden Doggett – so some pretty unique names in our family!

Q & A with Dakota North

Dakota North

Dakota North, speedway rider

Dakota North is a 20-year-old Australian speedway rider currently plying his trade in the UK. We appreciate him taking the time to answer our questions – thanks Dakota!

1) Is there a story (that you’ve been told) about where your name comes from?

My father named me after an aeroplane that he really liked , the C-47 Dakota.

2) What does your name mean to you? Do YOU think you have a great name?

Ha ha! It doesn’t mean anything to me; I knew it was different when i was growing up but I thought it was normal.

3) Is it good or bad – or perhaps a bit of both – to have a distinctive name?

It’s good in some ways. People always ask about it and seem to like it, and people always remember it even if you don’t want them to. So it has its ups and downs – ha ha!

4) Do you care what others think of your name? What reactions from others have you encountered over the years?

No, I’m not bothered, it has been good with the ladies (ha ha)! They seem to like it after I introduce myself, and I always get the joke ‘Are you from North Dakota?’!

5) Do you have a favourite name you’ve come across over the years?

I haven’t really thought about it, but I did go to school with a girl named Zarli and I thought that was a sweet name.

6) Gotta ask: have you ever been to North Dakota in the US? 🙂

Ha ha –  I knew this question would be asked, and I sure haven’t, but I might get out there one day!
